Cohasset, MA Dog Training - About Us

"My new Puppy!"

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."

- Edward Hoagland

Greater Boston Dog Training and will provide your dog with:

  • Mental as well as physical exercise

  • Structure in the model of an alpha dog (in the moment)

  • Lots of affection at the right time -- and in different ways.

There will always be new circumstances that impact a dog's behavior, but Zephyr will provide the framework to help you and your companion immediately and effectively deal with the issues that may seem impossible to overcome.

Without humans, dogs would live in a pack, and every pack needs a leader. Zephyr teaches you how to take on the role of pack leader and establish a level of attentiveness and respect that only the alpha dog gets.

You will be doing yourself and your best friend a huge favor by giving them what a good pack leader would give them. With Greater Boston Dog Training you will increase the bond you already have with your dog or create a bond that you're missing.

Obedience training often clears up behavioral problems because boredom is usually the culprit for destructiveness and other issues. Zephyr encourages you to challenge yourself and your best friend.

Greater Boston Dog Obedience Training is the perfect way to achieve your goals.

Most dogs are natural athletes, and giving them a constructive outlet for their energy, like obedience training, can be a truly rewarding process and experience.

Zephyr believes that by providing your companion with exercise, discipline, lots of affection, and treats at the right time, your relationship with your dog will be balanced and so much more enjoyable.

Zephyr's Bio

Zephyr Clarke-Dolberg is a certified professional dog trainer, dog behavior expert, and long time member of the IACP (International Association of Canine Professionals), which is recommended by the Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan when looking for a trainer in your area.

Zephyr has been extremely passionate about dogs since early childhood. His continuous love for dogs has lead to a lifelong commitment to them. As a young boy he would research every breed he could, and go to dog shows to see them in person.

Zephyr's mother raised and bred Portuguese Water dogs for 20 years, but it wasn't enough. he would also ride his bicycle to the local dog pound in Milton, MA. to spend time with all breeds and sometimes his favorite ones. He would do anything just to be around them, including coaxing home the occasional stray and telling his mother it had followed him home.

Zephyr was mentored by expert dog trainer, and author of Women's Best Friend, Babette Haggerty, at Haggerty School for Dogs in Jupiter, Florida. This school was founded by the famous Captain Haggerty (Master Trainer, Hollywood movie dog trainer, and author).

Zephyr eventually opened Miami Dog Training in Miami, FL. There he was fortunate to not only work with great every day dog lovers but also with Celebrities and Professional Athlete's who love their dogs... It was also during this time that Zephyr had the pleasure of learning from world renowned animal behaviorist Dr. Ian Dunbar; creator of Sirius puppy and Sirius dog training, among other things.

Zephyr has volunteered his time at the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue in Palm Beach, working with small and large dogs of all breeds . Whether behavior modification, obedience training, or etiquette training, Zephyr has spent countless hours working with dogs to make them adoptable.

He has appeared as a guest speaker for the staff at the Greater North Miami Humane Society where he mentored the kennel staff in safe handling and training of dogs for major Humane Society events.

Zephyr recently moved back to Massachusetts and brings with him a passion, talent and the ability to create bonds that last a lifetime. Now based in Middleboro, Massachusetts, Zephyr Clarke-Dolberg continues his commitment to humane societies by working with Skyler's dog and cat rescue in Lakeville. His goal is to help new rescue dog owners achieve success with there canine companions.

Zephyr has also helped children with autism with their dogs, and Veterans with the need for emotional support dog training. He offers military discounts.

Zephyr's dog training philosophy and style is balanced, caring, effective and appeals to both the common sense of the human and the dog. Serving Massachusetts, and beyond.

EVALUATION CONSULTATION $125 (price may vary based on distance)

The Greater Boston Dog Training Evaluation is hands on, and the best way to give you an honest assessment and figure out the program that works best for you and your dog. A typical evaluation is 1.5 hours of our undivided attention for the purpose of meeting your puppy or dog in their own environment where they are more likely to exhibit the behaviors that are causing concerns. We'll discuss your needs, wants, and goals for training, and devise a plan to achieve success, teaching you tips and tricks for addressing high priority issues. Often common problem behaviors stem from a lack of leadership, exercise, discipline, and affection given at the wrong times. Additionally, simply providing a constructive outlet for their energy like obedience training can solve many issues alone. Often owners are amazed to see a marked improvement in their dog after just a single session.

We will be providing you with a wealth of valuable information! We encourage you to take notes in all of these wonderful sessions!

Note:  All of the programs that are classified as "Obedience Training" will cover all of the following issues, plus more!

Chewing, Coprophagia, Digging, Excessive Barking, Biting, etc. If you have any specific problem behaviors that you need addressed, please bring that to the attention of Zephyr during your initial evaluation consultation session. Zephyr has worked with many dogs over the years, and more than likely has addressed just about every issue that dogs are known to wrestle with.

HOUSE-BREAKING $100 (ONE-TIME SESSION) - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Housetraining Or housebreaking is really a broad term for conditioning your dog's expectations of his own behavior in the home. The main thing to acknowledge and accept is that this is a process that takes place over time and changes as your dog grows both physically and developmentally. There are multiple aspects of this process, the first and most pressing being Potty Training, the two main methods of this being Crate Training or Pee Pad Training. These methods are fundamentally different. Your method should ideally be chosen in advance of the pup or dog entering your home. Commonly when the dog starts to understand the process is generally when the humans begin to make mistakes; learn proven methods, tips, tricks and that stand the tests of time.

Dog socializing begins with mom and litter mates and it's important part of development that should be continued as much as possible with other puppies and dogs that you know are up to date with vaccines in a controlled environment. Part of understanding your dogs interactions is recognizing a primal drive that dogs have for hierarchy, by natural selection they are either a leader or a follower, and all are opportunists. Greater Boston Dog Training teaches you how to safely introduce, meet and greet other puppies, dogs and people, specifically veterinarians and groomers will appreciate it, but it shouldn't end there. One of main keys to creating a well balanced dog is familiarity, and positive interactions with various stimuli prior to 5- 6 months old. Most older dogs can be rehabilitated through a more lengthy process and we'll teach you how to work with the temperament of your adult dog.

This is a program specifically designed for first time dog owners however long time dog owners will also benefit from Zephyr's expertise. The fact of the matter is, your puppy is learning from every interaction whether your intentionally training him or unintentionally the one being trained. Greater Boston Dog Training will help you to stay a step ahead of your pup while intelligently and effortlessly planting seeds for future behavior, etiquette and obedience training. Ideally, training in this format starts the day the pup enters the home. Lucky for us they live in the moment and therefore even if his introduction to life in your home has been less than perfect we can help you turn it around.

This program was designed by Zephyr to give your best friend a running start in your busy life, often those in need of an emotional support dog, busy professionals, celebrities, and professional athlete's find it makes the most sense to take advantage our custom programs. Greater Boston Dog Training will guide you through the process, from helping you select the right breed and temperament for your family, finding the breeder, initial procurement of the pup for boarding and training and hand delivery with on location owner training. Custom programs are just that, we'll be as involved as you need us to be with the process. We also do offer this type of extra intensive training for young or adult dogs as well. This is our most intensive Program and sets owners up for success from the day your new family member enters or re-enters your home. The average custom program is 8 weeks, however with particular breeds and temperaments, it may be necessary to extend training time. The commands for these programs usually go beyond the basics and are tailored specifically for your needs.

PUPPY BEHAVIOR & ETIQUETTE - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Often puppy behavior problems can be addressed in a single session, just like on the Dog Whisperer. Puppies with more serious issues for example separation anxiety, shyness, aggression require multiple sessions or may be a good candidate for boarding and training. All pups and owners will benefit from Greater Boston Dog Training Obedience Programs because teaching the right things from day 1 gives your dog a constructive outlet for their energy. Behavior problems are usually the symptoms of the greater problems like boredom, lack of leadership and pack structure. Zephyr has extensive knowledge of dog behavior and knows that the best way to love your dog, is to lead your dog and will help you achieve the role of pack leader. You will gain a new understanding of how to communicate with your dog. Zephyr applies balanced methods that will appeal to the common sense of both you and your dog.

Whether you have just rescued a new dog with issues or have had ongoing problems for years, don't be discouraged! Dogs live in the moment, and if we change what we're doing, they'll change what their doing. Greater Boston Dog Training will help you recognize what you may be unknowingly doing that adds to or creates unwanted dog behavior. We often find dog owners learn to accept inappropriate behavior or work around it, putting the dog away when company comes over or seeing another dog on your walk and immediately heading the other way for fear of a scene! Maybe your dog steals food from the counter, barks excessively, or jumps on you and company. Perhaps your dealing with the other end of the spectrum with a dog that's exhibiting shyness, fear aggression, or separation anxiety? Whatever the case may be we'll help you problem solve and create the kind of companion you desire. Some issues can be addressed in a single session like leash pulling.

SEPARATION ANXIETY - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Living with separation anxiety in dogs can be an extremely challenging undertaking and is potentially emotionally and physically draining on both the owner and the dog. This trait can crop up in any breed but tends plague some breeds more than others and can range from dog behavior problems like excessive barking, destructive dog behaviors like chewing furniture, pulling down window treatments and scratching doors, to urinating and defecating multiple times during the separation frenzy. Often times one thing and sometimes it's all the above. If your dealing with any of these issues call Zephyr for assistance.

DOG AGGRESSION - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Aggression in dogs can come in many forms for example; resource guarding, fear aggression, dog aggression, human aggression, territorial aggression, even play aggression etc. These behaviors left unchecked have a tendency to get worse. Do you find yourself putting your dog away when company comes over, or avoiding people and other dogs on walks? Maybe at this point you've just stopped walking your dog altogether, we can help, call Greater Boston Dog Training for an initial evaluation session if you have concerns about your dogs behavior, we'll assess what's going and help you turn it around, Your dog may be a good candidate for boarding and training.

TRASH CAN RAIDING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Smart dogs will quickly figure out that raiding the garbage is a self rewarding behavior. One of the hardest types of behaviors to catch because most dogs only do this frustrating action when no one is around to stop it. If your dog is taking advantage of you when no one is looking, call Greater Boston Dog Training for peace of mind.

In most cases Zephyr will be able to teach you how to walk your dog properly in just one session. The importance of hierarchy on the walk is the foundation and sets the tone for your relationship with your dog, a new understanding will help you transform a simple activity that can be a otherwise stressful into an enjoyable bonding time for you and your dog. Even if your dog has been pulling you around for years, we can teach old dogs new tricks. Don't waist your time and money on harnesses, no pull harnesses, gentle leaders and snoot loops, call Zephyr today for a life changing session!

RESCUE DOG TRAINING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

All dogs, especially rescue dogs can come with a wide range of issues, or are simply more prone to exhibit dog behaviors which aren't the most endearing. Zephyr deals with all of them and has worked with several Humane Societies and Dog rescues, training staff for major Humane Society events, acclimating new owners and rehabilitating dogs to make them adoptable.

Greater Boston Dog Training regularly works with Skyllars Rescue in Lakeville, MA we can assist you with whatever problems that may be occurring. Perhaps you have a great dog with no issues to speak of but would like obedience training and some basic control, which we believe every dog should have, Call today!

PUPPY BITING / NIPPING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Your new puppy will bite, nip, chew and scratch. It's truly how we interact and and react at the times when this normal puppy behavior occurs, that relays the message of appropriate or inappropriate behavior. Greater Boston Dog Training will teach you caring and effective methods for addressing common, and not so common puppy behavior.

COPROPHAGIA / POOP EATING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

There can be many reasons a puppy or dog will eat there own feces. Greater Boston Dog Training will help you problem solve and get the issue under control.

DIGGING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Most dogs enjoy a good dig, some people cater to this natural desire by creating a place that's ok for digging. More often than not dogs digging in our manicured or polished lawns is not an acceptable behavior. If your puppy or dog is digging up your prize winning roses give us a call we can help.

CHEWING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Your puppy will chew and needs to chew. It's really up to us to guide our puppy or dog to chew the appropriate things that he or she has been given for chewing. Zephyr will show you how to best guide appropriate chewing and prevent unwanted chewing.

JUMPING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Unwanted Jumping is probably one of the most common dog behaviors that I encounter. So much of the time, jumping behaviors are mistakenly or unknowingly encouraged and rewarded, sometimes they're self rewarding if they jump on a counter or table with food on it. If your dog is jumping on you, company, strangers or furniture we can help, Call today!

EXCESSIVE BARKING - Cohasset, MA Dog Training

Its totally normal for your dog to bark a little to announce their own presence or the arrival of someone on your property, many get dogs for just that reason. Some people experience excessive barking on walks, some start up when you leave the house, some do it to demand attention, it's out of fear in some cases. Territorial when people or animals are walking by your house or down the hallway in an apartment which can be a deal breaker when you have very close neighbors. You don't have to live with out of control barking, call Greater Boston Dog Training today!

Cohasset, MA Dog Training - Some of Our Delighted Clients

Greater Boston Dog Training is the best. Zephyr has come over to my house three times and in the first lesson he taught me and the dogs heal and sit. I can walk both dogs at the same time without them pulling me across the street. We are now working on the barking, jumping and stay. My dogs are reformed. We are all much happier because of Zephyr. Thank you.!!!!

Paula Campbell

We met Zephyr when we got a new puppy Skout who is a Dutch Shepherd. He is very energetic, stubborn and needs a strong leader to show him the way things are to be. We started the training with basic walking because Skout didn't want to walk out of the house so Zephyr helped us get over that issue. After that part of training was done Zephyr taught us as much as he taught Skout in basic commands like sit, heel, stay, down, go to your place etc. And more important than that, how to keep Skout challenged with mental exercise as much as physical exercise. Skout loves Zephyr and that says a lot about him as this dog is very weary of strangers, but he actually loved when Zephyr would come over for a training session and he would be exhausted after every one of them. Our experience with Zephyr was amazing and he truly understands each and every dog that he trains!!! You will not go wrong in your decision to have him train you and your dog.

Patrick and Angie Ferrer

Our family is so happy to know Zephyr. He came highly recommended by our dog sitter - herself a trained veterinary assistant. We have two dogs. One is quite fearful and the other was starting to get pretty bossy. On his very first visit, Zephyr showed us how to properly walk our dogs and we saw almost an instant result. A few weeks later, we boarded our dogs with Zephyr while on vacation. During this time, he worked with them on basic commands. This has made a big difference. We are still working with our dogs, but Zephyr's training and instruction has gone a long way. Our fearful dog is noticeably calmer and happier and our bossy guy is behaving better.

Zephyr is knowledgeable, relaxed and a great instructor. And he clearly loves the dogs he is entrusted with. Thank you Zephyr!!

Leon and Lizzie

My husband and I contacted Zephyr to get his guidance on how to properly train our labradoodle puppy. We also needed to learn the correct commands ourselves, when we need our puppy to obey. Winston like all puppies did not heel correctly on his leash and favored chasing squirrels during walk time. Within a few sessions and some practice Zephyr taught us how to command and Winston how to heel, sit and go down the stairs. Winston is now a well behaved puppy. It is quite apparent after seeing Zephyr interact with Winston that he truly loves dogs and wants them to behave properly. Zephyr is very patient and answers all your questions. You cannot ask for a better dog trainer when you have Zephyr work with your puppy. We have scheduled some refresher classes to refine some skills. He is also extremely flexible with his schedule.

Julianne, Phil and Winston

I met Zephyr through a neighbor in Miami who had a fantastic dog. I had to get one just like him--well behaved, attentive, and very loving. Zephyr helped me locate and obtain Cosmo and trained him for me in his home with his family.

When I flew up to Boston to pick up Cosmo, Zephyr spent two days making sure I was equally as well trained. The following year I wanted Cosmo made ready to pass his Assistance Dogs International certification and Zephyr and Cosmo worked hard together. Cosmo passed on his first try! Cosmo and I have been inseparable ever since then. We travel everywhere together and Cosmo behaves so well. GBDT is absolutely the only place I'd use and Zephyr makes it easy with his specialty services for busy professionals.

I'm a Veteran who was In need of an Emotional Support dog Zephyr was very informative and was able to guide me with caring and effective methods. He took very good care of my furry best friend for a whole month. Zephyr always made sure that I was comfortable and that I knew the command cues effectively. This has allowed me to continue with conditioning and training. He also provided many insights and tips. I've always followed what Zephyr has said from Day 1 and what I achieved, through the help of Zephyr, is immaculate results for a adolescent Siberian Husky.

Priscilla & Randy

I want to take the time to thank you for training our newest family member Cali. We have had other dogs before but she is the best behaved and obedient thanks to your passion for training dogs with love and true understanding to her needs. With your training I can bring her with me anywhere and she will obey her commands in public with other dogs right next to her! Your training has allowed her to not be leashed or contained with fences in our yard which it truly amazing to me that she will stay and knows her boundaries with cars and people only feet away! Thank you for giving us the gift of a well trained family member.

The Maynards

We can't thank you enough for doing basic and recall training with us. You were wonderfully flexible with times as my hours are not always convenient working nights at an animal hospital. Fly was extremely skittish and shy of strangers. We lost her for nearly a week when she was first adopted. With your help she is responsive off leash when called and more relaxed with unfamiliar settings and people. We would definitely recommend Greater Boston Dog Training!

Sarah Burrows

We want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to you for the amazing training you have provided to us & to Bernie. We were so excited to add a puppy to our family and it was very important for our busy family of five to have a well mannered & socialized dog . We feel so very fortunate to have benefited from your expertise starting when Bernie was just 9 weeks old . The tips & knowledge you imparted to us during those first early weeks proved invaluable & have allowed us to fully enjoy & understand her, thank you. As the weeks & months have passed , your talents have allowed our family to have such a rewarding relationship with Bernie. We are so happy to have a dog that we are enjoying both inside our home & out . She walks, heels , sits and stays on command ( and enjoys showing off her skills). It's a pleasure to take her on a walk or watch the kids walking her without being pulled around. Thank you for helping make the well mannered puppy we imagined a reality.

The Hart Family

In December 2010, I enrolled my six (6) month old Boxer puppy "Charlie" in Zephyr's 30-day in-kennel service dog-training program. After a short 4-weeks, Charlie returned into an extraordinarily obedient and well-mannered dog fluent in Hebrew. He mastered his individually trained tasks along with advanced obedience skills, on and off leash, in response to both Hebrew verbal commands and hand signals.

The commands he mastered were "Heel, Auto-Sit, Sit-Stay, Come, Down, Sit, Down-Stay, Drop it, Leave it, Stand, Emergency Down, Release, and Place" The Charlie also acquired proper social-behavior skills which included no aggressive behavior towards people or other animals such as barking, biting, snapping, snarling, growling and/or lunging, no soliciting food or petting from other people, and no sniffing merchandise or people or intruding into another dog's space. Proper socialization also included tolerating strange sights, sounds, odors etc. in a wide variety of public settings, walking calmly on and off leash, no unruly behavior or unnecessary vocalizations in public settings, and no urinating or defecating in public unless given the "release" command.

Charlie was also trained as a service animal in the task of standing and bracing the handler in the event that he or she loses balance. He remains standing in the event that the handler falls and requires the dog's support to rise. Once the handler rises, the Charlie does not move until the handler feels comfortable and begins to walk.

Today, Charlie is 5 years old and still recalls all of his commands. He plays with my 20-month old daughter calmly and is very tolerant of her. I will undoubtedly send my next dog to Zephyr. He is a very talented and hardworking individual.

Tamir A.

We were very happy to bring home Juno, our new puppy, but her exuberant personality got us worrying. Would we be able to get her to listen, to walk on a leash, and to stop from constantly jumping up?

We weren't sure, but Zephyr turned out to be an exceptional trainer. He taught the dog very well, and taught us to work with her. He was firm but patient. His combination of kindness and expertise put everyone at ease (Juno included) and he gave us the skills and confidence we needed as owners. He helped us become a family!

Nancy and Mike

I met Zephyr Dolberg in the spring of 2007 first thing I noticed about him is his calm assertive personality when dealing with people. As I got to know him I realized that Zephyr has an innate ability with dogs, his instincts with dogs are very rare. I spent time with Zephyr teaching him formal dog training, it was truly a terrific experience. Most people who learn how to train dogs do not naturally possess the instincts zephyr has, and usually it takes them a long time to develop it. Zephyr also had the opportunity to prove himself with large aggressive dogs living in a shelter environment. He certainly proved his ability to work with these dogs in a positive way, to rehabilitate and turn them into good canine citizens.

I wholeheartedly recommend Zephyr Clarke-Dolberg, yours for better dogs

Babette Haggerty

I really can't say enough great things about Zephyr!! Here is my experience, I hope it can be of help to you. I have an 11 month old mountain cur/retriever mix rescue (Daisy-Belle from Tenn) who had a rough start to life. She is extremely fearful of loud unfamiliar noises, especially cars, due to the circumstances in which her litter was abandoned. I quickly found out I just did not have the skills to help her overcome her fears to be able to go on a normal walk. I actually had met Zephyr one day while at the dog groomers, I told him all about her anxiety issues. He said that he could absolutely help, with either sessions or overnight board & train. After some thought, I choose the week of boarding and training. While I was going to miss her, I knew she was going to need the consistency of being with him for a week to get the best results.

Boy was that the right choice!!!! She came back a whole different girl!! She's not perfect, I don't want to false advertise, but she is 80-90% better than she was! She walks with much more confidence now, and is in general less fearful. There really was just so much to life she was afraid of, Zephyr took the time to work with her in so many difference settings and situations over that week to get her to overcome her fear of cars and now she walks beautifully on a leash! I would have been happy with that but I got so much more. He understood she is a sensitive girl, he gave her the love and praise she deserved, so she came home being able to sit, lay down, stay, and heal/walk on a leash. For our follow-up he showed me how to teach her go to your crate/bed. Just a few tries and she already has it!!

I will be practicing and look forward to a future sessions to work on distance and e-collar training. I am hoping my little girl will be a therapy dog someday, and with Zephyr & GBDT's help we will get there! You don't have to take my word for it, the proof is in the happy well behaved pups! I recommend getting a consult with him if you are unsure! You will be glad you did!

We were exceptionally happy working with Zephyr to bring our English Bulldog into a friendlier mindset (he randomly lunged at people, especially men). Zephyr not only trained the dog, but he trained us in how to handle him - how to make sure we don't transfer our anxieties to the dog and how to handle situations in which we anticipate a problem and situations in which we are surprised by them. Zephyr has a wealth of knowledge, patience and a great sense of humor - all of which came in handy! He is also truly a dog lover and it makes all the difference. We'd heartily recommend Zephyr and Greater Boston Dog Training.

Smith Family

My wife an I adopted a deaf terrier whippet mix who was rescued from Puerto Rico. After a few weeks of having her we started to see issues of aggression towards basically anyone that she met other then my wife an I. Heartbroken we called the shelter and considered bringing her back. They sent us to a specialist who prescribed her medicine and sent us on our way. The behavior didn't change and again we thought about giving Alba up. However we wanted to take one more chance since Alba had truly become a part of our family, enter Zephyr at Greater Boston Dog Training. He truly invested himself immediately in our case and began to think of everything to try to help Alba out. We have been working with him now for 5 sessions and although the process has been extremely difficult at times we have begun to see major improvements in her behavior. With his help Alba can now be around other members of our family and has even been walked around on leash by other members of the family. Zephyr is truly amazing with dogs and his never give up attitude is unreal especially seeing how frustrating our case has been. He truly makes you feel like he will stop at nothing to fix the troublesome behavior and always considers your feelings as well as the dog's in all of his training methods. We were always so heartbroken seeing Alba's aggression since she is such an amazing dog with us and we have become so attached to her and love having her as a part of our family. Zephyr made us feel like his number one priority was fixing this behavior so that we can keep Alba in our family. He has always made himself available to answer our questions and has spent plenty of time on the phone listening to our concerns and trying to find solutions to put our nerves at ease. I would recommend him as highly as anyone I have ever worked with in any field at all.

Very happy that we found Zephyr! We had a five month old Shiba Inu puppy Bolt who was doing really well, but then started getting quite aggressive with the food guarding and space guarding, and out of control with the play biting as he went into adolescence. I was really becoming afraid of him and worried. We have read so many dog training websites etc but we weren't successful, and I wanted to nip those behaviors in the bud before they became too dangerous. A co-worker of mine is having great success with her dog trainer in RI, so I called him, however Boston was out of his range-- but thankfully he referred me to Zephyr, who recently returned to the Boston area and who actually was his teacher.

Zephyr came out for our first session and he was definitely an expert, patient, confident, and assuring. I realized that on our own, with our inexperience with this kind of dog personality, we couldn't have taken the obedience training to the next level like our little puppy needed. We were so thankful to have found Zephyr, that he could share his experience and skills to help us out, and show us the tools we needed to teach Bolt how to make better behavior decisions. It definitely made a huge difference in just one night. Bolt is very strong-willed as shibas are known to be, and for us, we needed more advice to make sure we could help our puppy continue on the right path. Coincidentally we had already had a vacation planned the next week, and so we decided to do one of the training courses and have Bolt stay with Zephyr for 10 days.

He came back from "boot camp" all freshly bathed with nails trimmed, and demonstrated his newly learned commands to our delight. I was especially thrilled to see his progress in Drop it and Leave it, and he was Heeling like a pro! that's his best success. Zephyr then spent almost two hours teaching us everything he did and how to keep working on the training. It's a lot more fun to walk him now when he isn't out of control. Of course he isn't perfect yet, we have to continue the training and the practice every day.

Bolt is apparently very quirky with his food, and we definitely have work still to do. But now we have a strong foundation to build on for continuing the obedience training, and that's exactly what we needed. I was feeling a bit desperate before with all the challenges we had to work on with Bolt, but now we see a lot more of the sweet side of our puppy again. I am determined to figure this dog out, and now there is hope! We will have a follow up visit from Zephyr with Bolt in a week or so as part of the training course, and we are looking forward to seeing Bolt grow up happy, healthy, and safe. It's just as much about training the guardians as it is the dog, and Zephyr is good at both.

To anyone that is experiencing issues with your dog that you think cannot be corrected, I would recommend contacting Zephyr Clarke-Dolberg of Greater Boston Dog Training.

I've recently become a first time grandmother (and a proud one at that). My son and his wife both work full time so I offered to watch little Nicholas on a full time basis so that he's not with strangers 5 days a week for daycare. Now, the problem I have (or should I say "had") is that I also own a dog (Jack Russell named Maxie). She is 10 years old and still has the energy of a young puppy. She was so hyper and energetic around the baby that I was afraid she would scratch or nip at the baby. She cried when the baby cried and was always at my feet jumping up to reach the baby in my arms while I would be walking with him. She was so fixated on the baby that she would totally ignore me or anyone else and just run and run around the baby jumping up trying to lick him (and she would do this for hours). It got to a point where I was contemplating having to do something drastic like finding a new family for Maxie (oh, how heartbreaking it was to even think that). My son called Zephyr to come to the house and train Maxie.

It's only been 1 session so far (I'm not sure if a 2nd session will even be needed) and Zephyr was able to not only help train Maxie, but also trained/educated me on how to properly exercise Maxie (both mentally and physically). Zephyr gave me the knowledge and tools to use to not only exercise Maxie, but to also correct her behavior before she gets to the "hyper" point. Zephyr came prepared with different tools to use and took his time answering all of my questions and provided detailed explanations. He probably stayed a lot longer than the session typically lasts, but at no time was he rushing anything.

It's only been 3 days so far, but the difference is unbelievable!!! It's not to say this was magical or anything, there's still some work I have to do, but so far the work is well worth the results.

Thanks Zephyr for helping me,
Nicholas and Maxie

My six month old mini labradoodle puppy has learned to sit, stay, come and heel on a loose leash in just three sessions with Zephyr. He is also very good at training me, as her owner, which is the real secret to the task. I highly recommend Greater Boston Dog Training.

Cohasset, MA Dog Training - Our Guarantee

Greater Boston Dog Training offers a lifetime guarantee on all of our Obedience Training Programs.

You'll have a hard time finding other dog training centers willing to do this. Sure, some might claim to, but when you try to get them to take action on that, they will often come up with a myriad of excuses for why their guarantee is "just not valid in your case." We've heard all the stories from dissatisfied dog lovers. They'll say things like there were unforeseen problems with your home environment, or you did not take the time to reinforce all of the training your dog received.

But you will never hear anything like that from Greater Boston Dog Training!  If you ever come across a problem (which does happen, but is very rare!), then just call Zephyr and we'll arrange for remedial training sessions at absolutely no charge. That's our rock solid guarantee that you can bank on!

Cohasset, MA Dog Training - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Which kind of dog is right for me?
A. Congratulates to you for thinking about which breed is best for you. Often people buy the cutest puppy in the window, only to find that it isn't the right breed for them. When we know you and your needs better, we can help you make a wise decision about the right dog for you. We would love to help. We encourage you to pick-up Steve Diller's book, "Dogs and Their People".

We can also e-mail you a questionnaire which we will use to assess which dog you might like best.

Q. At what age do I start training my dog?
A. GREATER BOSTON DOG TRAINING'S philosophy is "as soon as he walks into your home." We feel that the sooner you train your dog, the easier teaching will be -- while preventing a lot of problems from developing. Of course, training will be modified depending on your dog's age.

Q. I need to get my dog housebroken. What do I do?
A. I am sure that you understand the difference between housebreaking and paper training. It is almost impossible to do both. To housebreak your dog, keep it in a small area, take it out often, and let it run around your house for short periods of time after having gone 'potty' outside. We are opposed to hitting a dog with a newspaper or sticking its nose in its' mess. If you are gone all day and have a puppy, see if a neighbor will help you out by taking it out for walks. If your puppy is at least four months old and not yet housebroken, contact us immediately!

Q. How do I find a dog trainer?
A. There are a lot of good trainers out there. Ask your vet or groomer for a referral. Ask a neighbor who has had his dog trained. The American Kennel Club will often have obedience clubs in your area. International Association of Canine Professionals are good sources for referrals. Of course, our recommendation is you leave it to GREATER BOSTON DOG TRAINING, the best dog trainer in the Greater Boston, South Shore, South Coast, Cape Cod, Metro West, North Shore, and Gold Coast.

Q. I called one dog trainer who said the only way to train my dog is in my home. My neighbor said that group classes are the best and my vet tells me it would be great if I sent my dog away to school. What is the best way?
A. They are ALL right! All of those methods are good, depending on you, your lifestyle, your dog and its personality.

GREATER BOSTON DOG TRAINING loves doing in-home private lessons allowing us to use the technique that will work best for you and your dog. You are on your own turf, so you and your dog are comfortable in familiar surroundings. This helps us truly understand the dynamics of your household and lifestyle which greatly affect your dog, its' training and the communication between you. Both you and your dog are also the most focused in your home, which makes the end result excellent.

Boarding and Training are also effective ways to have your dog trained. Professional trainers can accomplish more when alone with your dog than when they are teaching you and your dog together. Make sure that you take advantage of the handling classes that your we offer.

Q. I just got a dog, what do I do first?
A. Feel free to contact GREATER BOSTON DOG TRAINING for a Puppy Dog 101 session to avoid common mistakes of puppy or new dog ownership. Read two great books that will answer all your questions "Mother Knows Best" by Carol Lea Benjamin. You can also pick up a copy of Babette Haggerty's "Women's Best Friend"; Any Cesar Milan book is a step in the right direction as well.
